THINK OUTSIDE THE VOX

September 2025 Newsletter

VOX spent lots of time outside this summer on the Common for ASL, AD and Open Captioned performances of As You Like It (Commonwealth Shakespeare Company) and ASL interpretation with haptic suits at the Hatch Memorial Shell (Boston Landmarks Orchestra). Vox hosted a retreat for its local staff and consultants to recharge before we enter a busy season of community events and theater shows, including an ASL opera with Deaf dancers happening in Boston and another Mfoniso Udofia UFOT cycle play! Read on and mark your calendars.

Ululations and Gurgles of the Invisible

September 19-21 (AD on 9/21)

The BCA Plaza Theatres, South End

Blending opera, dance and technology, Guerilla Opera and Urban Jazz Dance Company have united to present Ululations and Gurgles of the Invisible, an interdisciplinary show that features vocalists, musicians and Deaf dancers – all of whom perform their music, dance and poetry with American Sign Language.

Think Outside the Vox is partnered to provide access for the artists and audiences, including an Audio Described performance with a tactile tour for the 3pm performance on the 21st. All performances are delivered in ASL with English supertitles (open captions projected above the stage). Dancers and musicians wear motion-sensor technology to drive gestures, sound and projection cues uniting the artists.

Celebrate Deaf Awareness Month and enjoy this multisensory music and dance experience. Come support Deaf artists, including Antoine Hunter and Zahna Simon, and their groundbreaking world premiere. Get your tickets here!

VOX at Landmarks Orchestra

Congratulations and thank you to the Deaf and Blind community for showing up to Landmarks Orchestra’s concert last month! Think Outside the Vox provided visual vernacular interpretation, or a poetic and gestural storytelling style of ASL, for Deaf and signing audiences. Vox also helped distribute haptic vests from Not Impossible Labs to Deaf and Blind patrons. Thank you to DASL Kristin Johnson, ASL team Christopher and Aimee Robinson, Vox staff, interpreters, audio describers, sighted guides and volunteers who made this outdoor concert a multisensory experience for all.

Partnership Spotlight: Vox and A.R.T./New York

Vox’s Culturally Competent Audio Description Training made it to NYC! We partnered with A.R.T./New York to host another Culturally Competent AD workshop. Thomas Reid and Cheryl Green are leading 15 NYC-based trainees on Zoom, primarily Blind/Low-Vision artists. Learn more about Vox’s impact on the field of AD and high quality accessibility education or sign up for a future class by visiting ThinkOutsideTheVox.org.

Posing with Purple – Vox at the Docks

How we find balance: Vox took a stretch and a collective breath before the summer came to a close. We had a lovely time at the lake, swimming, feasting and exhaling with each other in person.

What kind of training/webinar would you like to experience?
